Check out The Grill Room at the Cafe Royal in the west end. It's not cheap, but it IS pretty awesome, and more French than a whopper! Get the course with the duck liver.

68 Regent St I think.

Dude. The sandwiches at Pret a Manger are awesome. I don't care if they're a soulless chain, and owned by McDonald's. The sandwiches rock, and don't cost much. And the shops are everywhere.

Hmmm, ok, I'll give those a try as well. I only walked into one once and they did look tasty, but I don't remember them being too cheap. I'll investigate...

The food at EAT. and Paul (or whatever they are called) also looked like good simple food, but expensive.

Yes, and if you look, you'll notice that all beers in Germany are served with a complimentary Rock God

You'll notice that NONE of this food is English. English food is congealed blood, pork pies, lard with stuff, jellied eels and boiled meat. English food is not sushi, waffles, polenta, or even curry.

Any European country will have a bunch of tasty food by default, all imported from other European countries. Please show me a good traditional English restaurant that sells good traditional English food and I'll happily make a day of it!

And I DID mention that you can make good food at home because there's good (though expensive) produce around. It just so happens that you make exceptionally good food. But English food quiche aint...

And Pret a Manger is about as English sounding as La Marseillaise.

Yeah, La Marseillaise kind of stirs the old British pride, eh? Every time I hear it, I face Big Ben and jelly an eel.

Then what are you trying to say about our Saturday morning English Breakfasts?

They are the best.

But if you want good english food London is not the place to find it, London is that multicultural how can you expect english food to be good when its pretty much never cooked by an authentic english person or someone who knows how to cook it properly. They do other cuisine well because no real english people live in London.

I even liked haggis and black pudding, well the veggie versions they made in Edinburgh.

Canterbury showed us tasty pub food, and good english breakfasts.

Ok im just avoiding work now.

and I dont think food is that expensive.
with our shopping and a bit extra we only spend about 15-20 quid a week for food.

still....avoiding work

I remember going to yo sushi and enjoying it, but it was really expensive, like 4 pound for a small plate of sashimi. I'm pretty sure the title was more exciting than that though, something like "yo! sushi" or "yo sushi!" maybe even "yo sushi!!!11one".

English food is typically crap. I think it is to do with not properly recovering from second world war-style ration food, and northern england is particularly bad.

However, in yorkshire they make a dish they call shekels(sp?), which is made by filling a large bowl shaped yorkshire pudding with beef stew. My wife's grandfather made it for us, buying the puddings and filling it with ingredients from cans, but it was surprisingly nice.

The English have only one sauce: melted butter. And they crave Rich Tea biscuits. Tells you everything you need to know about English cooking.

Regarding English restaurants, head to Dartmoor or the Cotswolds, hike for an hour or two in driving rain, then find a small pub with an open fire and horse brasses, and order Beef in Ale Pie. It'll taste like heaven.

Of course, you'll be so wet and knackered you could eat the table mats and they'd taste just as good...

The cotswolds are beatiful, and I agree that old pubs are your best chance at a decent (perhaps hearty) meal. Painswick is a nice old village, with a really out of place set of traffic lights.
